Backgammon Free is the best free Backgammon game on Android!

Backgammon is a game of skill and strategy; one of the world's classic parlour board games, played for recreation and gambling. Like Mahjong, Backgammon is played in social groups in coffee houses and bars. Historically, variants of this game are believed to have originated in Egypt over 3000 years ago, from where it was adopted by the Romans and then later travelled to India. It also spread to East Asia, but was largely replaced by Xiangqi (Chinese chess). It is now very popular in the West.

Features:
-- Strong Backgammon AI
-- 5 Difficulty levels
-- Full match play + Doubling Cube & Crawford rule options
-- 4 Boards and Piece Sets
-- Single Player vs Computer or local 2 Player
-- Hint & Stats
-- Random Dice generator or Manual Dice input
-- Designed for both Tablet and Phone

This free version is supported by 3rd party ads. Ads may use internet connectivity, and therefore subsequent data charges may apply. The photos/media/files permission is required to allow the game to save game data to external storage, and is sometimes used to cache ads.

*Does it cheat? See "CPU Strategy" page + Manual Dice option (use real-world dice) to prove to yourself that it doesn't*

At first AI was really a challenge to beat but now it is not fun at all, I beat it regularly; like 90% of the time at level 5. However it is very easy on the eyes, smooth play just wish AI was a little smarter. I am an accomplished player of 35 years so dont pay no mind to my gloating. Overall one of the better games I have played Full Review

Visually excellent, great gameplay. On rare occasions when trying to move pieces close to each other the app picks the wrong one, but it's rare. Also seems like when you up the difficulty the AI simply gets better rolls (ie four double in a row) or enters unrealistically easily when the inner table options are very limited. Still, the pros outweigh the cons. Great game. Full Review

I really cannot understand why the others think that the game at level 5 cheats. I have the opposite impression that the game gives me the dive i want at any time. I rated it with 3 stars because the game is very easy. I play at level 5 all the time and it cannot beat me. It mades stupid moves. I have 6 wins at 7-round matches and AI 0. And rounds won 22 vs 7. The game is too easy. I have screenshots for anyone who may not believe. Full Review

Please stop adjusting game for people who do not want a challenge and only want to win with no effort or skill. The CPU makes stupid moves now. I have this version of bacgammon on another phone and I love both wining and loosing at challenge stage 5 on old phone, but the CPU is no challenge now on new phone. I win all the time even on stage 5. Or maybe you guys could develop a pro version and a beginners version. Please give me back old CPU. Full Review

Under the premise that there's always room for improvement, this version of backgammon is better than most of the freebees that are out there - but it could be so much better. The game graphics are old fashioned - not optimized for good game play. So easy to hit something incorrectly and make an error move. I found that it's best to use a stylis for this game. What I like about the game is the aggressive "expert" mode. At first, it may appear that the game is "cheating" - but what is really going on is that the game uses a very nice algorithm to "guess" the best possible moves with a given roll. Some of the solutions are insanely predictive - which gives the impression that the game is getting the rolls it needs to win. Why I like this feature - it's instructive. Good training for live games. I'll be happy if in future versions the publisher optimizes game play. Full Review

The app is well done. The differences in CPU skill level are not very noticeable; level 5 doesn't provide a more challenging opponent than levels 2 or 3. Would give 5 stars if Acey-Ducey (or other backgammon varieties) were available. But that's not a complaint about the quality of this App. I have wasted entirely too much time playing Backgammon on my phone! Good stuff... Full Review

At level 1,2&3 this is a great app and a good way to learn to play backgammon. Level 4 is OK, but level 5 is awful. The dice throws are rigged to give the computer every chance to win. When you understand the algarhythms level 5 is quite easy to win, but it makes you play an unnatural game of backgammon which damages your real world game play. Full Review

overall great application. it could improve as some moves from the cpu are wrong towards the end mostly. also I found CPU to wrongly accept doubling. CPU moves are in general predictable. another area of improvement would be at the end when the players pick up their pieces. CPU is wrongly moving the pieces , not taking care to place pieces in all positions Full Review

This game is the most cheating game I have ever played. It says it doesn't cheat but it looks like over a hundred people can't be wrong and this one person be right. Maybe she doesn't play the game or she would realize it for herself.I have five out of 6 on the computers side closed every roll it gets out, this is not random, this is not true game play, it is downright cheating. Also, you can be up on the game and all of a sudden it gets double double double to catch up more cheating. I will have just one out of 6 covered at my home side and guess what I will all of a sudden get double of that number. Please heed my warning this game is the most cheating b.s. game out there Full Review

Fun game, but the computer constantly gets EXACTLY the roll it needs. It happens way too often for it to be a coincidence Update: Still playing and still frustrated with "random" numbers. The coincidence of numbers coming up for the AI that it needs is far too common. Update 2: AI dice are still loaded. You can keep denying it but it's so obvious. Update 3: Dice are still loaded. It sometimes gets rolls that defy logic when it needs them. Good way to pass some time if you like backgammon. Sometimes it makes totally stupid moves even at level 5 difficulty setting that no rational player would make. They keep insisting that the game is truly random, I say baloney. Chances of getting the perfect roll are 1 in 36. The perfect roll happens way to often for the opponent here. If you are good at backgammon and you play enough games you can learn to beat it often enough to make it fun. Full Review

The sum of the first dice rolls that are won by both players must equal exactly to total games won by both players. They do not! Because they do not, something is wrong with the game. If the statistics counter can't keep track of simple numbers, how can you trust ANY part of the programming. If you can't trust the game, you can't trust the company. Full Review

Easily the worst cheating POS ever developed. Choosing the highest level of difficulty only means the opponent will have two to three times as many doubles every game, and will get the perfect roll to hit all unprotected tiles in one turn. It will double you when trapped, then get a series of miracle rolls to beat you by EXACTLY ONE TILE every time, using multiple doubles, 5 or 6 doubles in a row, whatever it takes. Even on level 5 you should be able to get at least a 50% win rate. Count the number of doubles the AI gets when bearing off though, and the fact that nearly every time it's reentering a piece from the bar it will hit a blot of there is one there whereas when you are reentering it will take you 3 or 4 turns even when you have 3 or 4 points free to renter on. Developers will keep saying it's not rigged though. Full Review

Dice rolls are loaded against you. Too many times the exact roll needed (against you) happens and you can't get anything in your favor. You get exactly what you Can't use, while all the rolls the other way are just whst is needed for the game to catch up. I have always felt this way about this game, but after watching six consecutive doubles to come from behind on one game and seven out of nine rolls the next, I had to say something. Note, I only play level 5. Full Review

This game simply cheats When you play in the levels 4 & 5 especially. It is the only way the app can control how good it is or isn't, by manipulating the dice rolls. It is pure and simple. Surely on the levels 1-3 it just does stupid moves, and leaves it's pieces alone and vulnerable to attack, or capture. However, there is no way that the app isn't programmed to cheat. There are so many replies from AI saying the dice rolls are random yet quite clearly there is something wrong with it. Although I have more 1st throws and doubles, all of mine come when I am unable to use them. Occasionally there will be a very even game but then the computer gets 2 x double 6s in every following game and invariably starts with 6/5 as well. It takes all the enjoyment out of playing the game Full Review

I just downgraded my rating to 3 due to ad issues. The ad server shows the game down a lot. The ads during play aren't intrusive visually but the game lags badly when ads appear. Full screen ads between games are quite obnoxious. Enjoyable game. I'd like to see a stronger AI. also, the piece movement could be a little more convenient. For example, move the pieces with a double tap if there's only one valid move. Also roll the dice automatically, at least as an option. Full Review

When i first downloaded the game it was great, dice rolls seemed very random. Playing at level 4 won about 50% of the time. Then after a few weeks I noticed the doubles for the cpu player were about double every game, reset statitics and the following match had 17 doubles for cpu to my 10 and 16 pieces hit to my 11, this pattern went on for a few more days, to frustrating to play game of skill and luck and not get any luck. What are the odds that I roll a 3 on one Dice and a one on the other three times in a row, and the computer rolls two double six and has at least two more doubles in the game? If I play ten games in a row, the computer wins the first roll an average eight times. True the game is addictive but no matter how many times you say it's not computer favorite, the odds prove that it is. But still a good game.,my God it's so computer favorite, it's giving me a headache! just an update a few months since my original comments, still extremely computer favorite, just played needed 6 pieces off to win , computer needed 12 off ,the computer rolls three doubles in a row, really!! When playing the lower levels, you'll get a lot of backgammon & gammon wins because the cpu doesn't manage their pips wisely. When playing level 5, I've noticed the cpu gets a lot more meaningful doubles. I had one game where it had 9 doubles to my 3 (2 of which came after the outcome was pretty much decided). Also, I find it strange that I've yet to start a round with a double being thrown...with over 150 rounds played, you would think at least one double would be thrown. In response to the developers: I'm not knocking the CPU's game strategy in level 5; in fact, I enjoy the challenge. What I don't like is the increased occurances of meaningful doubles. Frequently getting back-to-back high valued doubles has nothing to do with strategy. Nor does getting out doubled 7 to 1. Full Review

Speed & flexibility excellent. PLAYS FAIR without giving an unfair advantage to the AI. A bit confusing setting up the board and direction of play but was able to figure it out by trial and error. Newest version added several niceties, like no longer requiring you to roll the dice when on the bar and totally blocked. One logic bug: At end of game, AI clears its inner before outer tables, giving up unnecessary gammons or even backgammons. Full Review
